FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN

It's been a while since I had that feeling... no words can ever truly capture it, but it's the kind that leaves you wanting for more.

Too bad I wasn't in the best of my spirits last Saturday. My throat became scratchy early Saturday morning, and I knew that it was going to get worse. My afternoon, my throat was burning, and I started feeling woozy. Anyhow, nothing was to stop me from leaving the hustle and bustle of Manila, and on to the next stop in this never-ending journey of mine.

Puerto Princesa. I never thought I'd be awed again by any place in the world, the way Costa Rica has awed me and captured my heart forever. But I was wrong. I fell in love. One more time. Boracay is pretty much a mistress, someone you like to keep on the sidelines, to spice up your life once in a while, but Puerto Princesa is the wife-material - someone you want to keep forever and love with longevity, who has beauty that just transcends the trivial, the fleeting and the mundane. Puerto Princesa has captured my heart, too.

In a lot of ways Puerto Princesa reminded me of the many coastal towns in Costa Rica I fell in love with, such as Guanacaste and Puntarenas. The trip to Sabang was reminiscent of the weekend trips I had to visit not only the coastal towns, but also to the other sights such as Arenal, Irazu, Poas, and the coffee plantations in Cartago.

Day 1: Our flight was on Saturday afternoon, and after Cebu Pacific announced a delay, all the sleepless travellers (coming from shift) became restless yet still excited. We arrived at dusk and we were met by the staff at Lola Itang's where we stayed. The inn was around 15mins away from the airport, and we immediately settled in. Our first adventure happened during the quest to find a nice place to eat at. One of the trike drivers suggested we go to Badjao Seafront, which, unfortunately, was somewhere far, and we had to take the unlit roads, which of course, scared the first-time travellers. We then went back to our plan A, which was Kalui's. The place was jampacked, and they normally required reservations. Thankfully, they accomodated us, but the wait was almost an hour. Dinner arrived and we knew the wait was worth it. Fresh seafood galore! What a feast.

Tired and weary because I had barely slept, and because of my worsening condition, I decided to get a massage. It was so-so, but a welcome treat for my 1st real vacation after the summer.

Day 2: Time to check out Puerto Princesa's pride - the Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park, popularly known as the Underground River. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and apparently the longest navigable river tunnel in the world. The trip to Sabang took around 2 hours, plus a 30min wait at the wharf before riding the boat to the national park. As we traversed the South China sea, waves were a-splashing, but not too bad and scary like our trip to Anawangin back in summer. The stone formations are a sight to behold, and the view of the mountains is just totally breathless. THe boat ride to the national park was around 20mins, and the frontage was just glorious. The sand was fine and powdery, and it was just a photographer's heaven. Of course, I had the brilliant idea to leave behind my D80, because I was not in a clicking mood. Bad move. Anyways, this gave me an excuse to definitely come back another time. And I will return. Someday :)

Waiting for a boat to navigate the tunnel took another hour or so. And again, the beauty of the cave was definitely worth the wait. The bankero or banker/tour guide went on with his spiels with gusto, and listening to him was a delight. The sight was spectacular. Nature is indeed mysterious and mystifying. WOW cannot even begin to describe it.

On the way back to the boat we saw a couple of monkeys and at least 3 huge lizards who almost looked like roots of a tree until they moved. Again, WOW!

We went back to Sabang beach for our much-awaited buffet lunch. Food was abundant and delicious. After lunch, most of our companions frolicked at the beach, and sickly me stayed under the shade and watched. Boohoo. I was happy to be watching from afar. The sound of the waves has got to be the most beautiful music of all, and I was in my happy place :)

On our way back to the city, we stopped at the Viewpoint, where the view of the bay was absolutely gorgeous. It was easy to see that sunsets would be glorious to watch at that place, but unfortunately, we did not have the luxury to do that since we had to get back to the city before sundown. Souvenirs were sold at that stop, at a relatively affordable price. I got magnets for P35 /pc, a dreamcatcher, a back scratcher for my sweetie (lagi kase nagpapakamot sa likod, hahaha), and a lizard ash tray. I also got a couple of pearl earrings back in sabang. ONe can never have too many pearl earrings :)

We also passed by the Vietnamese village, which is now mostly abandoned. I wish that the government continue to maintain the place, it is an interesting part of heritage, not just for the Vietnamese, but also for the Filipinos. They can turn it into an immersion site, where anyone who wants to live the life of a Vietnamese can do so, even for a few days, right here in the country :)

We also bought cashew nuts along the way, and we reached our hotel just a couple of hours before dinner time.

We decided to check out another famous resto - Kinabuch for dinner. I had a seafood plate which was again, hearty and fresh. Yum! Our tour guide convinced us to try the tamiloc - a local, err, aphrodisiac (or so they say). Now, at this point, I was totally convinced that I will never be a Survivor, because I could just not dare eat anything that doesn't look like food. Tamiloc is actually a wood worm that grows in dead mangroves. It is long, thick, white and very gooey. Just looking at it made me want to barf. But the girls convinced me to try it. I knew I was never going to be able to eat it, but well, A for effort. So, I guess I'll never know if that icky stuff aroused feelings other than utter grossness.

I capped the night with another massage (hehe!) because I wanted to get rid of all the knots and stress I was feeling.

Day 3: The island hopping to Honda Bay (the locals actually call it Hunda) did not push thru because I was not feeling better. Which was another excuse for me to come back for more next time. We instead just decided to rest and watch TV, then checked out Baker's Hill for lunch. The place is definitely worth checking out. We had lunch at the cafe, which was almost disastrous because of their poor customer service. I bought several pastries for pasalubong and a new sarong.

Before we knew it, it was time to say our goodbyes.

BTW, we met a couple who had already retired from work, and they were travelling on their own. And when I grow up, I definitely want to continue exploring, hopefully, with someone in tow. But with or without someone, I know that I will continue to see my country, then the world, and I will fall in love again. Someday :)

FOREVER IN ONE NIGHT

It was more like several nights really... With the 'rents visiting, the last couple of weeks passed by in a blur. Honestly, it did feel like I was babysitting them at the beginning, but just as quickly I realize that there is nothing I wouldn't do for my parents, or for my family for that matter. At then end of the day, I wanted them to have fun and enjoy, no matter that I hardly had any sleep, and I had to drive them around for hours and hours.

Some highlights:

Kanin Club - I brought them to this quaint little resto at Westgate. KC is famous for their crispy dinuguan (which I don't eat, crispy or not), but which my parents absolutely loved! As their name suggests, they also have several rice meals, and I tried the chorizo rice, my personal favorite (which I usually order in Dulcinea). The sinigang was perfect, as was their kare-kare. The binukadkad na tilapia looked very interesting and yummy, and reminded me of the deep-fried fish I used to order back when I was temporarily living in Costa Rica. Of course, we didn't go home without trying their turon, and it's just heavenly. I've taken a liking to turon since I joined the New Blue, and the KC version is absolutely delish, what with their ube and buko filling (and the ube ice cream if you order ala mode, which I suspect was also home-made).

Mojito Bar - I always thought Manila Bay sunsets are a sight never to be missed. But it's even made more perfect by sipping mojitos. That scene is almost as perfect as sitting in a lounge chair watching the sun change colors in Boracay. My parents had the virgin mojitos while I ordered my usual fave - mangojito. The reggae music in the background all but reinforced the beach feel. As the night fell, we just watched the scene at the bay, including the magic fountain which changes color in the night. Even the occasional saltwater smell didn't ruin that moment. Made me even look forward to going to Boracay this December with the family.

Pampanga express - Well, I haven't driven to Pampanga in such a long time, but a visit there is never complete without visiting Clark, and checking out the duty free shops. I also never go home without bringing a jar of uraro, that powdery cookie which is cut like a flower, and which my nephew aptly calls, flower cookie :) I also discovered a pastry shop called Nathaniel's. We tried several of their products including cassava cake, puto pao, empanada, halaya, pastillas, and all of them were gooooood... Seriously.  I was also almost tempted to buy a parol, but I don't think I can add more clutter for my small space. Having my family over just made it seem even smaller. I lived in a house that fit a little more than a family of 8, and all I can say is, it's a good thing I'm not claustrophobic :)

Enchanted Kingdom - While I absolutely want to avoid going to the South at all costs, my parents had wanted to check out EK (potential "field trip" venue for their school kids). Well, the drive there was not fun. I expected the roads to have been better compared to a year and a half ago when I left the Old Blue. But if possible at all, SLEX has gotten worse. When we finally arrived at EK, the lines were miles long. Ugh. And to top that, I didn't have sleep that day, just coming from my shift, so I was definitely not in the mood to turn around and leave and be intimidated by the line. My nephews and nieces came along, so we rode the kiddie rides first. My parents specially enjoyed the 4D experience, and so did my 5yr old nephew. I don't think there's any other happiness that so mind-blowing to see the happiness of your parents and that of a child. We stayed for the fireworks and capped the night with a ride at the Ferris Wheel. The night view is just so awesome. I planned to take them to the greek taverna in Tagaytay that night, but I was just way too tired, and so were everybody else. I will have to leave that trip for the next time they come :) SLEX was much more peaceful on the way back, and we stopped at Pancake house for dinner. I tried their waffles for the 1st time, and I got a bit disappointed. Like the Starbucks waffles better. Speaking of Starbucks, I don't like their holiday offerings all that much.. Oh well, less calories for me then :)

Hairspray, Madagascar, Rihanna and CB - On Sunday, the 'rents went to watch Hairspray the musical, the kids watched Madagascar 2, while the adults watched Rihanna and CB. Well, the Fort certainly was the place to be that night. Even at 5PM, the traffic was already horrendous. The parking was a chore (I had to park in an unpaved area which nearly killed Sark). Good thing I live nearby so I got in and out of Fort pretty much unscathed. We definitely enjoyed the concert, and so did 70,000 more. If I was not going to Boracay and treating the whole family, I would have bought the platinum tickets, seriously. I settled for the gold tickets, which were not that bad. The concert was definitely more organized than Beyonce's concert, and they put the stage much higher. In terms of effects and production value, the Beyonce Experience was unparalleled, but CB's hotness is just way up there. It helps that I love all his songs - the club favorites, and even if David Archuleta almost ruined the song - With You is still one of the most romantic songs this year. It definitely felt like this I waited my whole life for that one night.. I was definitely bitin when CB ended his gig, even when he lip-synched through some of the songs. He just moves so well on stage and well, to say that everyone lusted over his bod that night could be the understatement of the year :) While I don't not like Rihanna, I just could not help but feel that CB really blew everyone away. Plus, the 40mins or so break in between kind of killed my buzz, even the fireworks did nothing to keep it. Then of course, my feet was just killing me by the time Rihanna took the stage. Still, Rihanna is a good performer, and Umbrella will always be the song that took the world by storm, and we will never understand why :)

Amici/Eng Bee Tin - Amici has become our favorite place to eat as a family. And Eng Bee Tin pastries will be the next pasalubong ng bayan :)

The 'rents have gone home to Cebu, and it's suddenly too quiet here at home. I like being by myself for the most part, but I can't help but miss the laughter and the banter as well...

THIS THING CALLED LOVE

Of course, we're more than just roommates. He's more than just a boyfriend, really. He is my best friend. My soulmate.

Yes, it's a struggle every day. Fighting the distance battle is definitely toxic, draining. And yes, I've been so close to giving up, way too many times, I can't even count them anymore. But what we have, it's definitely not something you'd want to give up without putting up a good fight. Stuff like this comes once in a lifetime. Or maybe twice.

And when I do feel defeated, and sad, and lonely, I just remind myself why I love him so much. And it's a simple answer. With him, I can be myself. He has seen me at my weakest, bitchiest, strongest, ugliest. He didn't fall in love with me because I'm ambitious, successful, more chika, or what-not. He loved me when I wore my hair the worst (remember the shaggy days? ugh!), and when I didn't take care of my skin or wore make up. He loves me now when I'm in one of those killer moods. He loves ME.

In life, you have to wear different masks, to match the different roles you play. There's the perky mask, the authoritative mask, the ambitious mask, the playful mask, the nurturing mask, so many more... But when I'm with him, the masks just come off. And he sees me, raw and bare. And he doesn't mind. Not one bit.
